My dog's ears are very dirty, should they be cleaned?

Yes, if your dog's ears look dirty, they should definitely be cleaned because unclean ears can lead to serious health problems. Dog ears cannot clean themselves naturally and especially breeds with droopy ears experience more dirt and moisture accumulation. Ear dirt can usually be brown, black, or yellowish in color and a normal amount of dirt is natural, but excessive accumulation increases infection risk. If there is bad odor, itching, redness, swelling, or constant head shaking along with ear dirt, this may be a sign of infection and veterinary intervention is required. Dog-specific ear cleaners should be used for ear cleaning, water or human products should never be used. During cleaning, it's important not to go deep into the ear canal because you can injure the eardrum. Using cotton swabs can also be dangerous, instead gauze or special ear cleaning pads should be preferred. In some dogs, regular cleaning is more critical due to ear structure, especially long-eared breeds like Cocker Spaniel, Basset Hound may require weekly cleaning. Swimming dogs are also more prone to ear infections because moisture accumulation in the ear increases. If your dog becomes uncomfortable during ear cleaning, don't force it, this can cause stress and make future cleanings difficult. You can do simple cleaning at home but professional cleaning may be safer depending on your dog's ear structure.
