Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about pet insurance.
Pet insurance protects both your pet's health and your budget by covering unexpected veterinary expenses. Accidents, illnesses, surgeries, and emergency treatments can create high costs. Traffic accidents, poisoning, falls from height, and fight injuries are covered by insurance.
Pet insurance typically covers emergency treatment, inpatient and outpatient care, surgery costs, medication expenses, X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, CT scans, and blood and urine tests. Additionally, third-party liability and lost pet advertisement coverage are offered. Some policies also include check-ups, nail trimming, and eye and ear cleaning.
The waiting period is the time after the policy becomes active until certain treatments are covered. For emergency treatments, it is usually between 24 hours to 15 days, for illness treatments 30 days, and for disability and injuries 7 days. These periods may vary by insurance company.
The deductible is the minimum amount you must pay per treatment. For example, if there is a 500 TL deductible, for a 1500 TL treatment, insurance pays 1000 TL. Some policies have no deductible, while others may apply different deductible rates (such as 30%) depending on the type of coverage.
Most insurance companies accept cats and dogs older than 3-6 months and younger than 10 years. However, some companies offer lifetime renewal guarantee for policies started before age 5 that continue uninterrupted for 3 years.
According to Animal Protection Law No. 5199, microchipping pets is mandatory. You must fulfill this requirement to purchase an insurance policy. Some insurance companies offer discounted microchip services at their partner veterinarians.
Some insurance products are valid at all veterinarians and animal hospitals in Turkey. Emergency treatment coverage can be used at non-partner veterinarians as well. However, free additional services and some coverages may require visiting partner veterinarians.
Routine vaccinations and internal/external parasite medications are generally not covered by standard pet insurance. However, some premium packages or additional coverages may include vaccination costs. It is recommended to check these details when getting a quote.
Congenital conditions or hereditary diseases of pets are generally not covered by the policy. Insurance covers illnesses and accidents that occur after the policy start date.
Pet insurance prices vary according to the animal's type, age, breed, and selected coverage. Average annual premiums for 2026 range from 2,000-5,000 TL for cat insurance and 3,000-8,000 TL for dog insurance. Different package options with various limits and fixed prices are available.
Pet insurance premium is calculated based on the animal's species (cat/dog), age, breed, gender, neutered status, and selected coverage package. Broader coverage packages and higher coverage limits increase the premium. The deductible amount also affects pricing: choosing a higher deductible lowers your monthly/annual premium.
For a pet insurance application, you generally need the animal's microchip number, vaccination card, your personal ID information, and if available, a veterinary health report. Some insurance companies may require a veterinary examination report at policy start. Since microchipping is mandatory in Turkey under Law No. 5199, this information is always required.
To receive insurance reimbursement, you need to submit the veterinary invoice, medical report/treatment documentation, and any prescriptions to the insurance company after treatment. Some companies offer cashless direct payment at partner veterinarians. Most companies process claims submitted via online portal or customer service within 5-15 business days.
Cat insurance is generally more affordable than dog insurance. According to 2026 data, the average annual cat insurance premium ranges from 2,000-5,000 TL, while dog insurance ranges from 3,000-8,000 TL. Breed, size, and active lifestyle are factors that affect risk assessment for dogs.
Standard pet insurance policies in Turkey are generally only valid within Turkish borders and do not cover veterinary treatments abroad. If you plan to travel internationally with your pet, it is recommended to confirm this with the insurance company before purchasing a policy and to research international pet health insurance if needed.
