What vaccinations does my pet need before traveling internationally?

For international travel, your pet must receive the required vaccinations to meet both the legal regulations of the destination country and to protect your pet’s health. Vaccination requirements vary depending on the destination, the species of the animal, and sometimes transit countries. Rabies Vaccine (Mandatory) The rabies vaccine is absolutely mandatory for almost all countries and is the most basic requirement. It must be administered at least 21–30 days before travel and must still be valid. Most countries require the vaccine to be within its expiration period (usually 1–3 years of validity). An official veterinary certificate and the vaccine label number must be provided. Some countries (especially the EU, USA, and Japan) require a rabies antibody titer test (RNATT/FAVN), and the results must be obtained at least 3 months in advance. Additional Vaccines for Dogs The DHPP combination vaccine (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza) is recommended or required by many countries. The Leptospirosis vaccine may be required especially for travel to tropical regions. The Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine is requested by some countries. The Canine Influenza vaccine may be mandatory for certain destinations. Additional Vaccines for Cats For cats, the FVRCP vaccine (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) is commonly required. The Feline Leukemia (FeLV) vaccine is mandatory in some countries, especially for cats with outdoor access. Other Treatments and Requirements Many countries require internal and external parasite treatments; EU countries in particular request Echinococcus treatment 24–120 hours before travel. Microchipping (ISO 11784/11785 compliant) is almost universally required for international travel and must be done before vaccinations. Planning and Preparation Consult your veterinarian at least 4–6 months before your trip and check current requirements with the destination country’s consulate. Carry vaccination records, the international health certificate, and physical copies of all documents with you. Travel to EU countries requires an EU Pet Passport. Some countries (Australia, New Zealand, Japan) apply additional quarantine periods, which must also be included in your planning.
